Job Description

At Connect2Hackney, we are looking for a dedicated and skilled Property Lawyer to join the ambitious, agile Legal & Governance team at the London Borough of Hackney.

In this role, you will manage a varied caseload of both routine and complex real estate and property legal matters with minimal supervision. Serving as a trusted advisor, you will deliver clear, accurate, and pragmatic legal advice across the Council's services-helping drive corporate priorities and deliver major outcomes for a vibrant, multi-cultural inner-city borough.

Key Responsibilities
  • Caseload Management: Oversee a demanding caseload of routine, non-routine, and complex property legal matters, ensuring work is carried out to high standards and within agreed timeframes.
  • Legal Advice & Strategy: Provide clear, consistent, and practical advice to senior officers, Council services, and committees on property law and local government implications.
  • Drafting & Documentation: Draft, negotiate, and complete complex legal documentation, agreements, and reports.
  • Client Liaison & Collaboration: Work collaboratively with internal officers, external solicitors, barristers, and partners to ensure a customer-focused, holistic approach.
  • Compliance & Standards: Maintain files in accordance with Lexcel requirements, SRA/Law Society rules, and practice management standards, while recording required chargeable hours (minimum 1,200 per annum) via the case management system.
  • Committee & Governance Support: Attend and advise at Council committees, working groups, and evening meetings as required.
About You

To succeed in this post, you will be a proactive property specialist who thrives in a fast-paced environment and enjoys working as part of a collaborative team.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Qualified Legal Professional: Solicitor or Barrister qualified in England and Wales, or a Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives (CILEX).
  • Property Expertise: Strong experience managing complex property legal matters (e.g., acquisitions, disposals, leases, development, or regeneration support).
  • Local Government Insight: An understanding of the workings of local government and the unique opportunities and challenges facing a diverse, inner-London community.
  • Case Management: Proven experience using legal case management software and meeting annual chargeable hour/outcome-focused targets.

Skills & Attributes:

  • Highly developed written and oral communication, negotiation, and influencing skills.
  • Ability to research and present complex legal arguments clearly to both legal and non-legal stakeholders.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and capable of working independently under pressure.
  • Commitment to promoting Hackney's Equality & Diversity policies in all aspects of work.
Why Join Hackney?

The London Borough of Hackney offers a supportive, modernising environment where your legal expertise directly impacts local communities and regeneration efforts. You will benefit from flexible working arrangements, ongoing professional development, and the opportunity to be part of an impactful legal team.
